ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Curriculum
The educational facilities offered at our school ensure quality education in a positive environment. We teach good citizenship to help strengthen the student's identity and ability to actively and positively participate in society. High standards of morality are stressed. SIS is constantly researching new methods and technology to maintain better quality.

Throughout the school day, students from elementary level upwards are taught each subject by specialized teachers. A broad range of activities which promote written and oral communication skills are offered. Students participate in research tasks, presentations, field trips, reading, spelling and writing competitions.

Islamic studies are designed, along with the Arabic Language courses, to foster in the students a love of their mother tongue and reverence for Islamic traditions and values. This course is compulsory for Muslims students only, however is offered as an option for Non-Muslims who show interest. Supplementary to the core curriculum is a rich array of options offered to students ranging from KG to Grade 10. These courses include but are not limited to computers, health, art and physical education. These classes are instructed by certified staff and are situated in rooms/labs tailored to the subject, insuring optimal instruction. These classes are essential in the enrichment and broadening of student imagination.

Students learn to develop skills and attitudes which will lay a vital foundation for their future. A happy, safe and secure atmosphere is created to build confidence and the self-esteem of the student. The SIS Philosophy emphasizes the importance of the student as an individual, thus class sizes are Limited to maximum of 20 students. Smaller class sizes facilitate student-teacher contact, adequate attention and accurate evaluation. Al Sharq is proud to facilitate not only core subjects but co-curricular subjects from elementary school onwards.

Children are assisted by their teachers to form healthy and productive work habits, ranging from organization to establishing regular study habits and homework routines. Teachers are encouraged to set and evaluate regular homework tasks. In earlier grades these tasks will be minimal but regular. This process lays the foundation of good work habits which will prove useful with the increase of academic demands. Students of the Month, High Academic Achievement, Principal's Honor List, are awards earned by students throughout the year. Al-Sharq's reward systems seek to recognize outstanding efforts and high achievement to continuously motivate and encourage students.
